First day - check!

We survived the first day of school unscathed. It was good to finally meet our students and get a sense for what our classes will be like. Though some of my students seemed hesitant to participate, most of my 9th grade students lit up when talking about Harry Potter and the Twilight series (they were asked what they had read over the summer.) And, after asking them why English might be useful to learn, one student suggested, "so that we can talk to Ms. Henning-Smith."

Jeff reports that his students seemed suitably intimidated by him. Especially the 6th grader who'd run into him and fallen over before class.

  1. Wow - congrats on being done with Day 1! Love the image of the scared little 6th grader running into Jeff and falling over. So, Carrie, are you going to integrate more Harry Potter into your lesson plans?

  2. Very cool "first day" stories. One of today's big news story here (on CNN)is the dilemma facing Chinese families (mostly in Shanghai)of whether or not to have more than one child. A loop hole in the law allows parents who are single children themselves to have more than one child. Demographic authorities are concerned about the increased number of elderly in comparison to the number of youth so are encouraging couples to have two children. Very interesting!

  4. So fun to picture you both in a classroom! I'm really excited for you. I hope that the planning has been going well and that you feel supported in that aspect.

  7. Hilarious picture in my head about Jeff and his unfortunate 6th grader, that made my day for sure. Hey...mom suggested that maybe some of my classes and your classes (either of you) could be pen pals...wouldn't that be fun? Is that something you could do there? We've done it before with another class, I think they were from Japan. What do you think? Love and miss you both.
